Reading Pause 2 · The Expression of Strength

A plain reading of shlokas 1.12–1.19

Before the fighting begins, the battlefield fills with sound — and those sounds begin to affect the people hearing them.

THE FIRST SOUND COMES FROM BHISHMA.

Sanjaya continues describing the battlefield.

Duryodhana has just told his commanders to protect Bhishma.

Then Bhishma, to encourage Duryodhana, roars like a lion and blows his conch.

Immediately, other conches, drums and horns are sounded.

The noise becomes tremendous.

THEN THE OTHER SIDE SOUNDS ITS CONCHES.

Krishna and Arjuna, standing in their chariot drawn by white horses, blow their divine conches.

Krishna blows Panchajanya.

Arjuna blows Devadatta.

Bhima blows Paundra.

Yudhishthira, Nakula and Sahadeva also sound their conches.

MORE WARRIORS JOIN THE SOUND.

The Gita continues naming warriors on the Pandava side: the King of Kashi, Shikhandi, Dhrishtadyumna, Virata and Satyaki, then King Drupada, the sons of Draupadi and Abhimanyu.

They too blow their conches.

The sound is now coming from many people across the Pandava side.

THEN WE ARE TOLD WHAT THE SOUND DOES.

That tremendous sound echoes through the sky and the earth.

Sanjaya says it shatters the hearts of Dhritarashtra’s sons.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE MIND?

Here, strength and support become audible.

What is heard begins to affect the mind.

First, Bhishma’s conch is meant to encourage Duryodhana.

Then many instruments sound together.

Next, conches sound from the Pandava side, one warrior after another.

Finally, Dhritarashtra’s sons are deeply affected by the sound.

WHAT MAY A MIND UNDER PRESSURE NOTICE?

Who responds?

How many respond?

What might that response mean for me?

WHY SO MANY CONCHES?

The passage names the conches and the warriors who sound them.

That detail lets us follow the scene as it builds.

So these details are more than names to remember.

They help us experience how the battlefield changes before the fighting begins.
