Before the battle begins, fear is already influencing what is noticed, counted and protected.
WHAT IS HAPPENING?
Dhritarashtra asks Sanjaya what his sons and the sons of Pandu are doing at Kurukshetra, where both sides have gathered for battle.
Sanjaya begins describing the field.
Duryodhana sees the Pandava army arranged for battle and goes to Drona, his teacher.
The fighting has not begun.
DURYODHANA LOOKS AT THE OTHER SIDE.
He points out how the Pandava army has been arranged by Drona’s own wise disciple, the son of Drupada.
Then he begins naming powerful warriors on the Pandava side.
Some, he says, are comparable in battle to Bhima and Arjuna.
For several verses, his attention stays on the strength standing against him.
THEN HIS ATTENTION TURNS TO HIS OWN SIDE.
Duryodhana now names the important warriors with him:
Drona (the very person he is speaking to), Bhishma, Karna, Kripa, Ashvatthama and others.
He also says many more skilled warriors are ready to give up their lives for him.
The movement is clear: first the strength against him, then the support around him.
THEN HE COMPARES AND PROTECTS.
Duryodhana says his own strength, protected by Bhishma, is immeasurable, while the Pandava strength, protected by Bhima, is limited.
Then he tells all his commanders to protect Bhishma from every side.
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE MIND?
Here, fear works quietly.
It appears through attention.
First, the mind studies what may threaten it.
Then it checks the support available to it.
Next, it compares the two sides and speaks with certainty.
Finally, its attention narrows toward what must be protected.
A MIND UNDER PRESSURE MAY KEEP ASKING:
What am I facing?
Who is with me?
Are we strong enough?
What can I not afford to lose?
WHAT ARE THESE VERSES SHOWING US?
The battle has not begun, yet Duryodhana has already spent several verses naming warriors — first across the field, then around himself.
He compares the two armies and ends by ordering his commanders to protect Bhishma.
So the names do more than introduce warriors.
These details let us follow where a mind under pressure keeps placing its attention.
